The Phosphates SBU aims to lead in sustainable phosphate production, aligned with the Group’s vision “To Achieve A Better Future.” The SBU is the only manufacturer of Yellow Phosphorus in Malaysia. Once operational, its Bintulu plant, which is currently undergoing final stages of commissioning, will set a new precedent in South East Asia with the plant set to be the first to be fully powered by hydro energy. It will be capable of producing year-round with lower electricity costs compared to other regional players, giving it a significant competitive advantage.

The SBU is focussed on sustainable phosphorus production, with a commitment to environmental health and long-term industry demands. The SBU places strong emphasis on ESG principles by promoting waste reduction, utilising recyclable packaging and implementing water management under a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) framework. In addition, granulated phosphate slag is repurposed for use in the cement industry, supporting resource efficiency and circular economy practices. With an emphasis on innovation and sustainability, the SBU is preparing for future growth by enhancing plant processes to reduce carbon emissions and improve operational efficiency.

KEY PRODUCTS/SERVICES

The Phosphates SBU produces yellow phosphorus, a key industrial raw material used in the production of fertilisers, detergents, food additives, water treatment chemicals and flame retardants. It is also an important input in the manufacture of lithium-ion batteries and other advanced materials, supporting the growing global demand driven by energy storage and electric vehicle technologies.
